Rules: still private on the date shown (companies that have listed, such as SpaceX in 2026, are removed); valuation from a completed priced round, tender offer or secondary sale, not talks or estimates; subsidiaries of listed companies are excluded. Companies founded or funded by individuals rather than venture firms qualify only once a priced deal with outside investors sets a value, which is why Blue Origin, funded by Jeff Bezos alone, is not listed. Checked 3 October 2026.

What counts as a startup in this directory?
An independent, privately held company of 10 years old or less (founded 2016 or later) that is built to scale through new technology or a technology-led business model. Companies aged 11 to 15 that are still independent are listed as scale-ups. Listed, acquired and service businesses are excluded.
Where does the data come from?
Company facts come from official filings and registers: US Securities and Exchange Commission Form D filings for US startups, Companies House and UK Research and Innovation grant records for UK startups, and Wikidata, the open knowledge base (CC0), for the rest. Unicorn valuations come from each company's latest disclosed funding round or share sale, with its date and source. Data was checked on 7 October 2026.
What is a startup ecosystem?
A place where startups cluster close together, usually within about 120 kilometres, sharing talent, universities, investors and customers. The same method is used to find R&D ecosystems in the 311 Institute Global R&D Labs Directory, so the two can be compared.
How are startups linked to R&D labs?
Each startup headquartered inside one of the R&D ecosystems in the Global R&D Labs Directory is linked to it, so you can see where research and new ventures grow together.
Why is a startup missing?
The directory lists startups with an official filing, register entry or open record. Coverage is strongest in the United States and the United Kingdom, where filings are public; other countries are being added. If a startup is missing, you can suggest it using the contact form.

What counts as a startup
The Unicorn Index below follows the industry convention instead: any privately held, independent, venture-backed technology company valued at $1 billion or more, whatever its age.
