About the directory

What is the 311 Private Wealth Index?

The 311 Private Wealth Index ranks people by the value of the shares they disclose holding in listed companies, calculated by the 311 Institute from official insider filings.

Who is at the top?

Elon Musk has the largest disclosed holdings in the 311 Private Wealth Index.

Is this the same as a rich list?

No. It counts only disclosed holdings in listed companies, so figures are minimums. Private companies, cash and property are not yet included. It is calculated independently by the 311 Institute, not copied from any other list.

Where does the data come from?

From insider filings (Form 4) with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, which are public domain. Each figure shows the date of the latest filing used.

Why are some well-known names missing?

People whose wealth is mainly private, or listed outside the United States, are not yet covered. Coverage will expand as private valuations and filings from other markets are added.

How the 311 Private Wealth Index is built

Our own calculationEvery figure is calculated by the 311 Institute from official records. Nothing is taken from anyone else's rich list.
Disclosed holdingsShares each person reports holding in their insider filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, across every share class.
Valued at filed pricesEach share class is valued at the latest price disclosed in those filings, so every figure carries its date.
Families combinedWhere relatives report the same shared holdings, they are combined into one family entry so nothing is counted twice.
Put in contextEach fortune is compared with the wealth of a typical US household: $192,700, the median in the Federal Reserve's latest Survey of Consumer Finances (2022; the 2025 survey is due in late 2026).
311 Origin and giving311 Origin shows whether a fortune was founded, inherited or both, or built as an investor or executive, from company founding records. Giving Pledge signatories are taken from the Pledge's own public list.
311 Giving ScoreA provisional 1 to 5 score: grants paid plus the market value of assets held by the person's own private foundation, as a share of their disclosed wealth, from US foundation tax filings published by ProPublica, with one extra point for Giving Pledge signatories. People whose foundation filings are not yet matched show as not yet scored.
311 Future ExposureHow exposed each fortune is to change: emerging technologies from the 311 Starburst, weighted by how soon they arrive, plus trends such as tariffs, export controls, sanctions and concentration of wealth in one company. Low, medium, high or very high.

This edition covers disclosed holdings in US-listed companies only. Private holdings, cash, property and stakes in companies listed elsewhere are not yet included, so figures are minimums, not total wealth. Holdings reported for investment funds rather than individuals are excluded, as are cases where filings capture only part of a holding. Checked 3 October 2026.
