WHAT IS RESILIENCE?
Resilience is survival in its purest form. It is the ability of animals, including humans, companies, and systems to adapt to and recover from stress, whether it’s economic, environmental, political, social, and or technological, and emerge the other side stronger. However, in today’s fast paced world being resilient by itself is no guarantee of survival, especially as the frequency and intensity of shocks continue to increase – companies also have to be able to adapt at speed, and striking the right balance between the two often means initiating a complete cultural and organisational overhaul.
RESILIENCE GOES CENTER STAGE
Resilience is one of those rare words whose significance and reporting is often marginalised until times get tough. Throughout history companies have all too often acknowledged the word with a mere hat tip at their AGMs, and individuals rarely give it a first thought. Today though, in a world where the traditional status quo is unravelling, where century long alliances are being de-stabilised, and where disruption is a constant stalking horse, resilience has quickly become one of the most used words in corporate board rooms and government briefing rooms as companies and governments alike get hit by wave after wave of shocks.
RESILIENT AND FLEXIBLE
The ultimate balancing act and the ultimate oxymoron today companies and countries have to be both resilient and flexible – like the proverbial Reed.
On the one hand they need the strength to be able to deal with whatever shocks the world throws at them, but they also need to be adaptable, agile, and flexible enough to pivot either part of or all of the company on a dime. But, traditionally, these two organisational competencies are inherently incompatible because being resilient often requires organisations to have trusted hard wired partnerships and processes, while being flexible requires being able to break and reshape these at speed and often in unexpected ways. Therefore, at a minimum, organisations need to be less beuracratic, centralised, and monolithic, and that alone for senior leadership teams who prioritise low cost bases and lean operations can be an alien and daunting prospect. However, with the right guidance and fresh perspectives it’s amazing what can be achieved.

HOW RESILIENCE IS CHANGING
It can easily be argued that today being a truly resilient organisation – the ability to diminish and decouple yourself effectively from shocks – is becoming an increasingly difficult task. After all, the world used to be more predictable and stable, and Black Swan events were rare. Now though leadership teams face a seemingly never ending list of shocks that they need to respond to, including the impact of primary and secondary tariffs, conflicts and the threat of military embargoes, corporate blacklisting, disinformation, sanctions and trade wars, to the impact of cultural, economic, political, and technological decoupling, environmental catastrophes, supply chain snarl ups, and hundreds of other mind blowing examples.
Today, as we transition to a Bi-Polar and Multi-Polar world, we live in a time characterised by tumultuous change, transition, and instability, where the only thing that’s predictable is unpredictability, and where Black Swans seem to occur almost daily. Ultimately, changes are faster and more frequent, the consequences of failure are greater, and the swings are bigger – and it’s only going to get more volatile from here.
These are what’s keeping leadership teams awake at night, and this is why protecting companies from the worst first and second order impacts is a board level priority, no matter what company you work for or sector you represent – because no one is immune.

ARE ALL RESILIENCE SPEAKERS THE SAME?
Just as every challenge your company faces can be unique so too is every Resilience speaker, and every one of them is the sum of their experiences and relationships. However, while some have theoretical knowledge, talking through the psychology of resilience, and others talk through frameworks, there are those who, scared and battle hardened, have led organisations through the greatest challenges, emerged stronger and now dedicate themselves to helping others through their own tough times.
And that’s what Matthew Griffin, one of the world’s most in demand Resilience, Geopolitics, and Leadership speakers does daily.

MATTHEW'S DAILY WORK
In the most simplistic of terms our present day happens when different events converge – whatever those events are.
Some of these events are the result of things that were set in motion many years, decades, or even Millenia ago, such as the development of intrinsic human behaviours, others happen spontaneously, and the remainder fall somewhere in between. Unsurprisingly, the theory goes that the more of these events, or Signals, that we can catch early, the better able we are to model the impacts when they converge, then the better we should be able to forecast the Preferred, Plausible, Probable, and Preposterous futures. And this has been my personal mission for the past two decades, at Dell-EMC, IBM, and now at the 311 Institute – to identify as many Signals as possible, intensively research them all, including their behaviours and the forces driving them, and then work to develop the most accurate version of the future that we can.
One of the oddest comments I hear from Futurists, even some of the most renown, is that it’s impossible to predict the future, and that we aren’t here to predict anyway. But, I dismiss that point of view, because even with limited data we can predict things such as the continuance of Electric Vehicles, the continuous development of AI, and so forth. I also believe that the more Signals we can see, and the better able we are to understand their behaviours and impact, that the breadth of futures that we can predict can be increased. And, for those occasions when we don’t have data and or are working with imperfect data I developed the Anchoring Constants Foresight Model which so far has played a pivotal role of keeping my own predictions on track. Predictions, as you can see below, such as the emergence of Generative AI and autonomous AI companies, the democratisation of skills, and many others.
However, while envisioning the near and even medium term future is difficult, the further out we go the fuzzier the future gets.

REASONS TO BOOK MATTHEW
SEE EVERYTHING . EXPLORE EVERYTHING . SUCCEED .
The reason to book me as your next keynote speaker is simple: I can help you see EVERY FUTURE and SUCCEED.
Unlike other speakers I can show you the whole future, not just the 30% of it that others will show you. And then I can share the tools and thinking you and your audiences need to explore it, understand it, and lead it. I understand though that you may think of this as so much marketing hype, so to prove that it isn’t I encourage you to test me, and if you can find a topic that I can’t discuss at an expert level, and in greater depth than others, then I’ll DONATE $10,000 TO CHARITY.
Are you ready to take the challenge!?
