The short answer

Where is AI today?

On closed tests of knowledge, science, maths and coding, the best AI now matches or beats expert humans: it is ahead of the human score on 5 of the 10 tests here that have one. Where it still falls short is open-ended, real work: it completes about one in five real freelance projects, and new puzzle tests like ARC-AGI-3 still catch it out.

The length of task AI can carry out on its own has doubled roughly every four to seven months since 2019, and the price of a given level of AI falls about 40 times a year. Use is exploding: Google alone processes more than three quadrillion tokens a month.

Which AI lab is ahead?

OpenAI leads the most areas (6 of 17): Maths, Learning on the spot, IQ tests, Safety, Bias resistance, Price for intelligence.

How often is the State of AI updated?

Sources are checked every day and the page is rebuilt when a figure changes. This is the October 2026 edition; each figure shows its own date and status.

Can Matthew Griffin present the State of AI as a keynote?

Yes. Matthew Griffin, founder of the 311 Institute, presents these findings as a keynote, board briefing or leadership session, updated to the day of the event.

How the roll-up works: each measure is scaled so the leading country scores 100, then the four measures are averaged. These lists cover the leading countries only, so a country that does not appear on a list scores 0 for it. Governance, trust and language layers are shown on the globe but not scored, because they are not like-for-like.

Learning capability and speed

On ARC-AGI-3, which asks agents to learn unfamiliar games on the spot, the best model went from 0.5% at launch in March 2026 to 62.7% by September 2026 (GPT-6 Astra), against 100% for humans. Learning new rules from a given context stays weak (best 27.9% on CL-bench), and no frontier model is known to update its own weights from use.

Details

Same study: working memory 145 to 150 for most models, but perceptual reasoning 50 to 81 (near the floor). Processing speed and full-scale IQ could not be scored. Authors include Google researchers; older models only.

Source

  • Contamination: Mensa Norway is public, so models may have seen it in training; the offline test exists to control for this, and scores on it run about 15-20 points lower.
  • Ceiling: Mensa Norway tops out near 151 and the offline test near 136, so the leading models are now at or near the maximum and the tests cannot separate them.
  • Small item count: the offline test has 16 items, so one right or wrong answer moves the score by several points; single runs are noisy.
  • Input mode: vision and text-only versions of the same model can differ by 20-60 points (e.g. GPT 5.4 Pro: 145 vision vs 73 text in Apr 2026).

Not measured yet

  • No full-scale human IQ result exists for any current frontier model: published WAIS-style studies cover 2024 models and cannot score processing speed.
  • TrackingAI tests consumer chat apps, not raw APIs, and the offline test has only 16 items, so small score gaps (a few points) are not meaningful.
  • TrackingAI's site renders charts in the browser; figures here were computed from its published CSV logs using the site's own scoring formula (Mensa: 63.5 + 3 x (raw - 5.833)).

There is no standard independent bias leaderboard for current frontier models: makers report their own BBQ scores (Claude Opus 5.5 ambiguous bias 0.01%), and the AI Index 2026 says such reporting is sparse. Independent tests still find harmful stereotypes in every model tested and a left lean on political surveys that shifts with who the model thinks is asking.

Effects

What AI is changing, first and second order

First-order effects are direct changes in the work or process AI touches. Second-order effects are what happens after people, organisations, markets and infrastructure respond. Controlled studies show AI lifts output on some tasks (15% more issues resolved in customer support, 25% faster consulting work inside the frontier) but can slow experts or hurt quality outside it. Second-order effects are starting to show: young workers in exposed jobs are 19% below trend in ADP data, data centre load drove 38% of PJM's latest capacity charges, and 52% of Americans are more concerned than excited.

Not measured yet

  • No causal estimate of AI's effect on total employment or wages exists yet; the Stanford ADP findings are descriptive and Yale's national data show no clear shift.
  • No reliable 2026 randomised estimate of developer speedup: METR says its late 2025 round is biased by selection and is redesigning the study.
  • No published measured link from a specific data centre to a household electricity bill; PJM monitor figures are market-wide.
  • No consistent official data on data centre water use per site; local disputes rarely publish volumes.
  • No measured share of the frontier model market across consumer and enterprise use from an independent source; Menlo's figure is from an Anthropic investor.
  • No on-the-record 2026 OpenAI revenue run-rate found.
  • Census BTOS changed its AI question in Nov 2025, so no like-for-like long series.
  • No Census business survey figure after early May 2026 was found.

How we build this

Method and sources

We track the best published score on each major AI test, the model that set it, the date and the human score where one exists. Sources are the test makers’ own leaderboards, independent evaluators (Artificial Analysis, Epoch AI, Vals.ai, METR, Scale AI), the model makers, the Stanford AI Index, the IEA, company filings and official announcements.

Where an independent evaluator has run a test, we prefer its result to the maker’s claim. Makers often use their own set-ups, so their figures can be higher.

Benchmarks change: tests get new versions and some become maxed out. We say so when it happens, and keep the history.

The page is refreshed as new results are published. Every figure links to its source.

Each area is ranked on its own test, because the 311 framework keeps every domain score visible rather than collapsing them into one number. The lab roll-up counts placings only.

Every figure was researched from primary sources and then checked by a separate fact-checker who did not do the research. Figures that could not be confirmed were removed.

Independently checked: confirmed by a primary source or an independent evaluator. Maker's own figure: published by the company that built the model and not yet repeated independently. Reported, being checked: from a credible report, waiting for primary confirmation.

What is a benchmark?

A fixed set of questions or tasks used to measure AI. Because every model takes the same test, scores can be compared over time.

Is AI smarter than people now?

On many closed tests, yes: the best models beat expert humans on PhD science, competition maths and coding. On open-ended real work, and on new puzzles designed to be easy for people, people are still ahead.

What is a token?

A small piece of text, about three quarters of an English word. AI reads and writes in tokens, so the number processed is a direct measure of how much AI is used.

What is AI IQ?

The score AI models get on IQ tests made for people, tracked by TrackingAI.org. It is a rough comparison only, because the tests were not designed for machines.

How often is this updated?

As new results are published. The date at the top shows the last update.

Why is there no single overall ranking of models?

Because models are strong on some tasks and weak on others. A single number hides that. We show the leader in each area and count how many areas each lab leads.

What does open weights mean?

The model’s trained parameters are published, so anyone can download and run it. Closed models are only available through the maker’s own service.

What is the difference between first and second order effects?

First order is the direct change, for example a support agent answering more queries an hour. Second order is what follows, for example changes in hiring, prices or energy demand.

What does this mean for your organisation?

Matthew Griffin briefs boards and leadership teams on where AI is heading next and what to do about it.
