Key findings

What does the codex say about strategic foresight?

  1. Surveys by Deloitte and Aarhus School of Business and Social Sciences cited in the codex show organisations with dedicated corporate foresight teams achieve a 200% higher market cap on average, and future prepared organisations are 33% more profitable.
  2. Most foresight frameworks identify only around 30% of the changes that matter, leaving 70% unexplored. The codex links this to PwC's 27th CEO Survey, where 45% of 4,702 CEOs doubted their companies would be viable in ten years without reinvention.
  3. The Anchoring Constants Model looks for the innate behaviours of systems that hold true across time, such as economic growth, trust, miniaturisation and task automation, to judge which trends are most likely to persist and dominate.
  4. The Deep Foresight Framework runs through six models: FRAME, EXPLORE, PREDICT, IMAGINE, ASSESS and ACT. Used together they deliver a complete foresight programme; used individually they support discrete workshops.
  5. The codex argues for regular foresight programmes rather than one-off workshops, which lose momentum once participants return to their day jobs, and offers Horizon LITE, Pro and ELITE programmes, with LITE designed to run in just an hour.

Questions and answers

Questions people ask about strategic foresight

What is strategic foresight?

Strategic foresight is the practice of envisioning and analysing the many plausible, possible, preferred, probable and preposterous futures, then adapting ahead of time. In the codex, Matthew Griffin describes it as being about three things: saving you time, minimising future surprises and preparing you for what is coming. It gives teams a safe space to develop scenarios and test how they could help or harm the organisation.

Why is strategic foresight important for business?

Strategic foresight helps leaders make better, faster decisions and design resilient strategies. The codex cites surveys by Deloitte and Aarhus School of Business and Social Sciences showing organisations with dedicated corporate foresight teams achieve a 200% higher market cap on average, and that future prepared organisations are 33% more profitable than their peers.

What is VUCA-MAX?

VUCA-MAX is the 311 Institute's way of describing how the world is changing. It extends VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) by adding that changes are increasingly Massive, Accelerating and eXponential. The codex argues this makes it harder than ever for organisations to predict disruption and spot new opportunities, which is why strategic foresight has become a must-have.

What is the difference between a foresight workshop and a foresight programme?

A workshop is a single event, while a programme runs over time. The codex explains that after one-off scenario workshops it is easy to lose momentum, see participants return to their day jobs and shelve the outputs. Running a programme keeps the team, consistency and momentum together, and makes it more likely the results become actionable initiatives.
