The Exponential Futures Curriculum cover

In short

What is the Exponential Futures Curriculum codex?

The Exponential Futures Curriculum is a 76-page codex by Matthew Griffin, Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, that gives schools, academia and governments the insights and tools to teach futures education. The first edition, published in August 2022 and known as the Teachers Bible, explains the curriculum, how to run your first course, what the first trial run showed and the course and lesson plans you need.

Who it is for: It is for head teachers, teachers and school leadership teams, universities, education ministries and anyone building a futures education programme for students.

Education is our software upgrade

Why does futures education matter now?

How and what we teach children has changed little in over a century, while the rate of technological and societal change keeps getting faster. The gap between Industrial Age curricula and the world students will inherit is growing wider.

Left unaddressed, that gap risks leaving hundreds of millions of people unprepared for a future shaped by technology led change and a jobs market in constant flux. This codex sets out a practical way to close it.

Key findings

What does the codex say about teaching the future?

  1. The curriculum aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and can be self-led or instructor led. It is split into a Theory Module and a Practical Module, both of which can be adapted as the future evolves.
  2. In the first run of the Future of Food course, at least 85 percent of what was discussed and taught was not represented in exams or in the current UK school curriculum at all.
  3. The first course ran with Year 6 students, average age 11: three one-hour lessons over three weeks, aligned to UN SDG 2, Zero Hunger. The class gave its full attention about 97 percent of the time.
  4. Children grasped complex futures concepts better and faster than most adults the author has worked with. Their questions, close to a hundred in one lesson, became more informed as their knowledge grew.
  5. Change is hard but not impossible. Getting from the idea to the first course took just under three years, partly because COVID-19 delayed it by about two years, and the pilot ran at a private school because of its flexibility, not money.
