Key findings

What does the codex say about the future of smartphones?

  1. Moving to the next platform is a cultural problem, not a technology one. The codex argues the hardest step is breaking people's attachment to the screen, which is why separating the display from the device has to come first.
  2. The app economy will slowly erode. Content housed in siloed apps will be unified and then replaced by AI Companions that become the main interface, turning many services into a commoditised utility hidden behind the Companion.
  3. The near term future is many devices, not one. People already use different devices at different times of day, so the codex points to ubiquitous computing and an AI Companion that follows the user rather than the device.
  4. Smartphones are really mobile computing platforms. Most people spend less than a fifth of their time on them making voice calls, so the real question is the future of mobile computing and the behaviours it will drive.
  5. The codex maps what could replace the smartphone across three horizons: 2020 to 2030, 2030 to 2040 and 2040 to 2070. It notes many people think smartphone platforms will start moving inside us from 2045.

Questions and answers

Questions people ask about the future of smartphones

What is the future of smartphones?

The future of smartphones is less about the phone and more about mobile computing. Matthew Griffin's codex argues that once people are comfortable separating the screen from the device, the smartphone will fade into ambient, assistive computing spread across everyday objects, glasses, clothing and eventually the body, guided by AI Companions.

What will replace the smartphone?

No single device will replace it in the near term. The codex expects many devices working together, with an AI Companion that follows the user. Candidate formats include smart glasses, retinal displays and smart contact lenses, displays on clothing and skin, and, longer term, neural interfaces, assessed across horizons running from 2020 to 2070.

How will AI change smartphones?

AI will turn the smartphone from a reactive device into an intelligent companion. The codex predicts AI Companions will filter, organise, prioritise and respond to notifications for you, replace much of the app economy and decide which brands are shown, which raises hard questions for every company that relies on apps to reach customers.

Why is it so hard to move beyond the smartphone?

Because the barrier is cultural rather than technical. The codex explains that the computing, communications and sensing parts of a phone can already be built into other objects, but society is not yet ready to give up the screen. It suggests separating the display first and targeting younger generations such as Generation Z and Generation Alpha.

Who wrote the Future of Smartphones and Smart Devices codex?

It was written by Matthew Griffin, keynote speaker and Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, who has advised some of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers and their technology partners. 311 Institute runs keynote sessions, executive briefing sessions and foresight workshop sessions on the future of smartphones and smart devices for leadership teams.
