The Future of the
Connected World

What happens when everyone and everything is connected?

Our society, and the devices and things around us, are becoming smart and connected. That is a paradigm shift in how we develop, consume and innovate products and services.

The Future of the Connected World cover

In short

What is the Future of the Connected World Codex?

The Future of the Connected World is a 69-page codex by Matthew Griffin, Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, on the future of communications and the connected society. The second edition, published in January 2022, explores the Cognitive 6G Era and the Nano 7G Era, and what they mean for global culture, industry and society.

Who it is for: It is for telecoms, technology and infrastructure leaders, strategy and innovation teams, and any executive whose products, services or operations depend on connectivity.

Connection changes everything

Why does the future of connectivity matter to every business?

Technology has changed how we connect with one another, what we can connect with, and how we experience the world and our own potential.

This codex explores the future of communications and the connected society, and their impact on culture, industry and society.

Key findings

What does the codex say about the future of connectivity?

  1. 6G could become the world's first truly cognitive wireless technology. With new standards historically taking around ten years, the codex expects the 6G standard to complete in 2028 and mass commercialisation around 2030.
  2. Preliminary roadmaps put 6G at 1 to 2 terabits per second with 0.1ms latency, and connection density rising from one million devices per square kilometre with 5G to more than ten million.
  3. 6G is designed to connect land, sea and space, with full satellite integration, 99.99999% reliability and positioning precise to 1cm in 3D, yet its signals can be blocked by cardboard and water vapour.
  4. AI codecs and on device image reconstruction can deliver higher resolution content using up to 80 percent less data. The codex calls this inverse data growth, and it could bring some use cases forward by 5 to 8 years.
  5. 6G will break today's telecoms business models. Enterprises, industry and government will become micro-operators running private networks, while the Internet of Everything extends to the Internet of Nano-Things and Internet of Neuro-Things.

Questions and answers

Questions people ask about the connected world

What is the connected world?

The connected world is a society in which people, devices and things are increasingly smart and connected. The codex describes this as a paradigm shift in how we develop, consume and innovate products and services, and argues that technology has changed how we connect, what we can connect with, and how we experience the world and our own potential.

What is the future of connectivity?

The future of connectivity runs from 5G to 6G and then 7G. The codex expects 6G mass commercialisation around 2030, with speeds of 1 to 2 terabits per second, 0.1ms latency and coverage across land, sea and space, followed by a Nano 7G Era in which quantum technologies are likely to play a greater role.

When will 6G arrive?

The codex expects the 6G standard to be completed in 2028, with mass commercialisation around 2030 and mass deployment in the five years after that. It also expects the ITU to complete its IMT-2030 standard by the end of 2030, with 3GPP finalising 6G Release 23 around the same time.

How will 6G change business?

6G will support more than ten million devices per square kilometre and enable use cases such as smart cities, digital twins, tele-surgery, holographic communications and immersive entertainment. The codex also expects enterprises, industry and government to become micro-operators that run their own private networks and extend services to others in their supply chains.

Who wrote the Future of the Connected World codex?

Matthew Griffin, keynote speaker and Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, wrote the codex as part of his Codex of the Future series. The 311 Institute runs keynote sessions, executive briefings and foresight workshops on the future of connectivity that help leadership teams turn these trends into strategy.

How do I get the Future of the Connected World codex?
