Technology leads coverage as attention shifts from energy towards cities and development
What the world’s news said about the future on 26 October 2026, from the 311 Foresight Tower.
Technology led coverage, with security close behind. The Washington Post reported that an AI start-up founded by former DOGE staff broke into Anthropic in 12 hours, and other outlets reported a PHP exploit and an attack on Microsoft 365 tenants. Reuters reported that US candidates are tailoring messages for AI models used by voters. The Financial Post said the Bank of Canada may hike on Wednesday, and Bloomberg reported EU import curbs on China planned for early 2027. Deepfakes featured heavily in media coverage.
Technology took 23 per cent of news, the largest share. Over seven days, public attention rose 15 per cent for cities and infrastructure, while energy fell 48 per cent. Geopolitics had the most event stories, at 80. Events in the news included the Canada-EU summit, Vietnam's Autumn Economic Forum, the Russia-Africa Summit, a BRICS forum, the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo, and a pre-COP event in Fiji.
The signals suggest digital security, trade friction and rate expectations may shape the months ahead. Leaders could watch whether faster vulnerability discovery lifts the pace of cyber incidents, and whether the Bank of Canada decision and EU curbs point to wider tightening. Falling energy attention should not be read as easing pressure, given oil above $113 in one report.
