Firstly, thank you to Karen Taylor and the team at Deloitte for asking me to contribute and help them compile their latest Shaping the Future of UK Healthcare report, a copy of which you can find below.

As we look forwards to 2020 and beyond there is no doubt that increasingly democratised and powerful exponential technologies, which impact everything from the way healthcare services are consumed and delivered through to their impact on primary and secondary care treatments and processes, are not just going to have huge implications for the healthcare sector as a whole but they’re also going to play a transformative role in helping people live longer healthier lives and creating better patient outcomes.

From ground breaking in vivo gene editing treatments that have the potential to cure over 6,000 currently uncurable inherited genetic conditions through to 3D printing human organs and eliminating organ donation, both of which are just the tip of the metaphorical iceberg, the only way to describe what lies ahead of us, healthcare wise at least, is that we will increasingly see science fiction become science fact. And we need to be prepared to take full advantage of it.

However, as the pace of technological progress accelerates at an increasingly furious pace the healthcare sector’s ability to reap the benefits of these advances is going to be pushed to the limits so it’s imperative that governments, insurers, organisations, and regulators, as well as the rest of the healthcare ecosystem, act now to ensure they have the right operational and organisational models in place that will help them future proof themselves and expedite the adoption of these new technologies and capabilities as soon as they come to market.

Furthermore, and most importantly, the sooner the insights in this report are addressed and adopted the sooner patients and their families can realise the benefits too.
