The Emerging Technology
Starburst Collection

How fast is the technology landscape really changing?

Nothing stands still and everything accelerates. The annual Griffin Emerging Technology Starbursts are a quick way to visualise these changes and picture their impact on business, culture and society.

The Emerging Technology Starburst Collection cover

In short

What is the Emerging Technology Starburst Collection?

The Emerging Technology Starburst Collection is a 41-page codex by Matthew Griffin, Founder, President and Futurist of the 311 Institute, that brings every annual Griffin Emerging Technology Starburst from 2017 to 2025 into one place. The downloadable fifth edition, published in January 2023, reviews the 2017 to 2023 editions in turn, so you can see how the technologies, categories and timelines changed from year to year; the 2024 and 2025 editions have their own pages.

Who it is for: It is for strategy, innovation and technology leaders, investors and policy makers who want a fast, visual view of which emerging technologies matter and how quickly they are maturing.

A history of the future

Why does a collection of Starbursts matter now?

As the rate of change accelerates, keeping track of every new technology and its knock-on effects gets harder. The Starbursts give you a quick bird's-eye view of the emerging technologies re-shaping our world.

This codex is the museum of the future: instead of filing old Starbursts away, it puts every edition on display so you can see how many powerful technologies are emerging, and how hard it is to keep up with them.

Each annual Starburst looks ahead from its own year and reviews the year before it. Today the live Starburst Centre follows 1,375 emerging technologies and 1,085 trends, updated as they change. See them all on the Starbursts page.

Key findings

What does the collection show about emerging technology?

  1. The horizon keeps moving out. The fifth edition (January 2023) shows the timeline running to 2035 in 2017, 2040 in 2018, 2060 in 2019, 2070 in 2020 and 2075 in 2023. The 2024 and 2025 editions also run to 2075.
  2. Only big markets make the cut. Every technology on the Starbursts has an addressable market value of over $500 billion, and each edition from 2017 to 2025 showed between 167 and 169 of them.
  3. The categories grew with the field. The fifth edition shows 11 technology categories in 2017 and 2018, with Intelligence added in 2019 and Electronics in 2020, reaching 13. The 2024 and 2025 editions also use 13.
  4. The fifth edition records that in 2019 the Starburst showed 25 General Purpose Technologies for the first time, the technologies expected to drive innovation and disruption across many sectors.
  5. The list keeps turning over. Each edition promoted new technologies onto the Starburst and demoted others. New entries in the fifth edition: 38 in 2017, 42 in 2018, 28 in 2019, 44 in 2020, 17 in 2021, 28 in 2022 and 31 in 2023, with the low 2021 figure linked to investment and research being redirected to fight COVID-19. The 2024 edition promoted 35 and the 2025 edition 13.
